How to Store Drugs Safely

Storing alcohol, cannabis, medicines, and drugs safely helps protect children and pets from poisoning. 

How to Store Safely: 

  • Keep substances out of reach and out of sight. 
  • Lock substances in a cupboard or container. 
  • Store substances away from food and drinks. 
  • Keep substances in their original labelled containers. 
  • Never leave substances unattended where children or pets can find them. 
  • Use child-resistant packaging when possible. 


            What to Do in Case of Drug Poisoning

            If a child may have swallowed alcohol, cannabis, or another drug: 

            1. Call the Ontario Poison Centre right away at 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-2764-7669) – available 24/7.  
            2. Go to the emergency room and tell the staff what they may have swallowed. Fast treatment can prevent serious harm. 
            3. If the child is unconscious or having trouble breathing, call 911 right away. 

                If a pet may have swallowed alcohol, cannabis, or another drug: 

                1. Call a vet right away for help.
