How to Store Drugs Safely
Storing alcohol, cannabis, medicines, and drugs safely helps protect children and pets from poisoning.
How to Store Safely:
- Keep substances out of reach and out of sight.
- Lock substances in a cupboard or container.
- Store substances away from food and drinks.
- Keep substances in their original labelled containers.
- Never leave substances unattended where children or pets can find them.
- Use child-resistant packaging when possible.
What to Do in Case of Drug Poisoning
If a child may have swallowed alcohol, cannabis, or another drug:
- Call the Ontario Poison Centre right away at 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-2764-7669) – available 24/7.
- Go to the emergency room and tell the staff what they may have swallowed. Fast treatment can prevent serious harm.
- If the child is unconscious or having trouble breathing, call 911 right away.
If a pet may have swallowed alcohol, cannabis, or another drug:
- Call a vet right away for help.
