Land Acknowledgement
The land that CK Public Health is situated on and provides services is in the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy: the Odawa, Potawatomi, and Ojibwe. These lands were also home to the Lunaapeew Peoples at the time of the written treaties. We respectfully acknowledge the Indigenous Peoples who travelled and cared for these lands before treaties were established.
Our neighbouring First Nations include the Lunaapeew at Eelūnaapèewi Lahkèewiit, also known as the Delaware Nation at Moraviantown, and the unceded territory of Bkejwanong, Walpole Island First Nation. Today, Chatham-Kent continues to be home to diverse First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples.
Chatham-Kent is covered by Treaty 2: The Detroit Treaty of 1790; Treaty 7: The Sombra Township Treaty of 1796; and Treaty 25: The Longwoods Treaty of 1822. We also recognize the enduring significance of earlier Wampum agreements, including the Two Row Wampum and the Dish with One Spoon Wampum, which continue to guide relationships and responsibilities on these lands.
At CK Public Health, we recognize that when settlers came to this land, they created a legacy of inequities that have, and continue, to impact the health and well-being of Indigenous People. We acknowledge the connection between the land, environment, and health, and we are committed to respecting and caring for this land as we undertake our work.
We encourage our staff and community to support the work of reconciliation, and we commit to providing services that are culturally safe, inclusive, and respectful for all Indigenous Peoples, their families, and communities.
This land acknowledgement is the first step in our ongoing commitment to reconciliation.
