Types of Drinking Water Systems
Municipal Water
In Chatham-Kent, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) takes care of the drinking water system. They test the water to make sure it is safe to drink. If there's a possible health risk, CK Public Health will let the public know by sharing an advisory.

Who's at Risk
Untreated water can cause symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms are usually mild but can sometimes be more serious. Some people have a higher risk of getting very sick, like young children, older adults, and people with ongoing health problems.
Your risk also depends on where your drinking water comes from. Untreated surface water, such as water from lakes, rivers and streams, often has bacteria and parasites. If you drink this untreated water, you could get sick.
Some people use private wells for their drinking water. If a well is damaged, dirty water from the surface can get in and make the water unsafe to drink.
To stay safe, do not drink untreated surface water. If you have a private well, get your water tested regularly to make sure it is safe to drink.
Report a Concern
If you think you got sick from drinking untreated water, see your healthcare provider.
Wash your hands often and stay home from work or school if you have symptoms. This helps stop the spread of illness to others.
