Enforcement and Convictions

We work to protect your health by making sure public health laws and regulations are followed.

Our Public Health Inspectors and Tobacco Enforcement Officers are allowed to go into places to inspect that everything is being done properly. If rules are broken, they can investigate and give fines or charges. Actions can be taken when laws and regulations are broken for:

          How We Enforce Laws

When doing inspections or investigations, our inspection staff teach people about best practices to prevent anyone from getting sick. They also advise people of their legal duties to protect health.

If needed, enforcement staff may charge a person or corporation to enforce the law and protect health.

          Types of Charges

The Ontario Court of Justice is in charge of how provincial offences are handled. If you want to learn more about how this works, you can visit the Ontario Court of Justice website.

          Offence Notice (Ticket)

A provincial offences officer can give a ticket, called an offence notice, if a person or corporation breaks a law or regulation. If found guilty, they must pay the fine written on the ticket.

          Recent Convictions

A charge becomes a conviction when a person is found guilty by a Judge or Justice of the Peace. It can also become a conviction if the person pleads guilty in court or pays the fine on a ticket.
