Personal Service Settings

Businesses that give haircuts, do nails, give facials, remove hair, or do piercings and tattoos are called personal service settings.

These services can sometimes spread infections from bacteria, fungi, or viruses that live in the blood or on the skin. If proper cleaning and safety steps are not followed, people can get sick. Keep in mind that you can’t always see things like blood or fluids that may carry disease.

Public Health Inspectors help keep personal service settings safe by:

  • Doing regular checks to make sure they are following public health regulations.
  • Looking into complaints or when someone gets sick or has an infection.
  • Teaching personal service workers how to safely prevent infections.

      Report a Concern

If you have a health concern about a personal service setting, contact us to make a report. Please include the following information so we can respond appropriately to your concern:

      • The name and location of the premises (if applicable).
      • A description of the health concern.
      • The date you observed the concern.
      • A phone number or email address where you can be contacted.

      Who's at Risk?

Anyone getting a personal service can get sick if basic precautionary measures are not taken. This includes washing hands, cleaning and disinfecting tools and surfaces, and throwing away items that should only be used once.

If you think you got an infection from a personal service setting, talk to your doctor. If you have a rash or infection, it’s important to avoid these services so you don’t spread it to others.

      For Operators

If you run a personal service business, it’s your job to help protect your clients and yourself from the risk of infection.

CK Public Health Inspectors will inspect your business at least once a year. They will ensure you are following the right steps to prevent infections.
