Before You Conceive

Planning Your Pregnancy
A healthy pregnancy begins before a baby is conceived (before you get pregnant). If you are thinking about having a baby, it is important for you to plan ahead.
Planning for pregnancy is important because your health and lifestyle choices can:
- Help you get pregnant
- Improve your health before and during pregnancy
- Support the health of your future baby
There are steps that you can take to have optimal health in the preconception period (the time leading up to conceiving a baby), and to prepare your body for pregnancy:
- Eat a nutritious diet
- Get daily physical activity
- Avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs
- Take a multivitamin with folic acid daily

After Giving Birth

Support
The postpartum period starts after your baby is born. It typically lasts 6 to 8 weeks. Having a newborn is exciting and joyful. However, the postpartum period can also be tough, emotional, and exhausting. Learning about what to expect after your baby arrives can ease your mind. It prepares you to care for and feed your newborn. This knowledge also helps you adjust to being a new parent.
