Do you know that certain antibiotics no longer work on certain bacteria? This is because we often use antibiotics incorrectly and too often. We need to prevent this problem from getting worse.
What can we do?
- As a patient, ask if tests will be done to make sure the right antibiotic is prescribed.
- Take antibiotics exactly as the doctor tells us. Do not skip doses and use the entire antibiotic even when we start to feel better.
- Do not use or share leftover antibiotics with others. Antibiotics treat specific types of infections. Taking the wrong antibiotic may be harmful.
- Do not save antibiotics for the next illness. Return leftover antibiotics to a pharmacy after finishing a treatment. They will dispose of them safely.
- Do not ask for antibiotics when a doctor thinks they are not needed.
- Prevent infections by practicing good hand hygiene using plain soap and water or alcohol hand rub. Antibacterial soaps can also lead to antibiotic resistance and are not recommended for use in our homes.
- Make sure everyone’s vaccinations are up to date. They prevent infections and reduce the need for antibiotics.
