Unpasteurized Fruit Juices and Cider

Did you know?  A small percentage of fruit juices and apple cider may be unpasteurized.

This means it has not been treated to eliminate contaminants such as:

  • E coli
  • Salmonella
  • various other organisms

This could make you or your family very ill and could even lead to death. Children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk.

You could find unpasteurized juices/cider available for purchase at:

  • local orchards
  • roadside stands
  • farmer’s markets
  • country fairs
  • juice bars
  • coolers in the produce section of grocery stores

Make sure you always read the label to make sure that the product is pasteurized.

Never drink or serve to anyone unless it says pasteurized.

If you decide to make your own fresh juice at home, always  make sure to:

  • wash the outside surfaces of the fruit
  • use a mild soap and/or bleach solution to kill harmful germs
  • wash your hands
  • prepare by heating product in a double-boiler to a temperature of 70 °C (158 °F) for one minute to pasteurize.
