“Trick or Treat!”
Every child loves to sing this out on Halloween in return for a candy treat. And although the idea of children bringing home such large amounts of candy all in one night can be overwhelming for many, it doesn’t have to be scary!
Don’t let the feat of cavities haunt you, here are some helpful hints for dealing with Halloween candy this year:
- Eat candy after a meal when a higher saliva production will protect the teeth. Having candy as a dessert instead of as a snack is a great idea!
- HALLOW-HACK: Pack a couple pieces of candy in school lunches for the days following Halloween. This will ensure that your little goblin is consuming the treat alongside their regular lunch!
- Avoid really sticky candies such as gummy bears, taffy and caramel as these tend to stick to the teeth for longer periods of time.
- Try sugarless gum or candy since it reduces the bacteria in your mouth.
- Try to eat candy in one sitting to reduce the time it is in contact with the teeth. Every time we put sugar or starch into our mouths, an acid attack starts and lasts for about 20 minutes after we stop eating. The longer we take to eat our candy, the longer the acid attack lasts, causing more damage to our teeth.
- HALLLOW-HACK: Have a dedicated “candy time” where you can enjoy some treats together as a family. Once the established “candy time” passes, put it up and out of sight until the next time.
- Brush and floss after eating candy. If you are unable to brush, try rinsing your mouth with water or chewing a piece of sugar free gum. Gums with xylitol help control the bacteria that can cause tooth decay.
Remember, the very best way to fight cavities all year long is by brushing (at least twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste), flossing, and regular visits to the dental office.
