The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit will be again using the provincial Harmonized Heat Warning and Information System for dealing with heat events in Chatham-Kent.
The system provides a consistent approach for processing and issuing heat warnings in Ontario. It also provides evidence-based heat warning triggers which are based on the association between temperature, humidex and mortality. When heat warnings are issued, you should take extra precautions to protect yourself and loved ones from heat related health risks.
A heat warning is issued when two consecutive days are forecasted to have a daytime high temperature greater than or equal to 31°C and a night-time temperature greater than or equal to 21°C or a humidex greater than 42°C.
An extended heat warning is issued when three or more than three consecutive days are forecasted to have a daytime high temperature greater than or equal to 31°C and a night-time temperature greater than or equal to 21°C or a humidex greater than 42°.
Heat emergencies are declared during extenuating circumstances (i.e., large scale power outage or during water emergency) during a heat event.
