I CAN Breastfeed my Baby During a Growth Spurt
Most babies have several growth spurts during the first 6 months of life. Typically, growth spurts will happen at around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months.
These are times when your baby’s brain and body are developing at a rapid pace! You may notice that your baby is fussier, not sleeping as often, and showing feeding cues as frequently as every half hour. It might feel like they are constantly cluster feeding, especially at night time. Don’t worry though, these are positive signs that a growth spurt is underway. It is not necessary to supplement, just follow your baby’s lead and feed frequently!
Growth spurts can be exhausting, but keep in mind that they are temporary and usually only last for 2-3 days. Make sure you are taking time to care for yourself by eating well, drinking plenty of fluids and resting. Don’t hesitate to ask for help with meals and housework. Accept the help offered to you by friends and family!
If your baby doesn’t fall back into their normal breastfeeding patterns in a few days, it could be something more than just a growth spurt. Call your health care provider or the CKPHU Healthy Growth and Development Intake Line at 519-352-7270 ext: 2903.
