Ebola virus disease is a severe disease that causes haemorrhagic fever in humans and animals. Ebola affects the body’s vascular system and can lead to significant internal bleeding and organ failure.
- The risk to Ontarians remains low.
- There have not been any cases of Ebola in Canada.
- The Ebola virus does not spread easily from person to person.
- It is spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, NOT through casual contact.
- Ebola patients are only infectious when they are symptomatic and become increasingly infectious as they get sicker.
The current outbreak of Ebola is in West Africa and includes Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria.
Public Health Ontario is working closely with additional partners on public health preparedness regarding importations of Ebola virus. This includes monitoring and surveillance, support for laboratory testing, and guidelines and resources for infection prevention and control.
